Group "Academics for Peace", Peace Activists from Turkey, Award Winners 2016

"Demanding peace is not a crime! Noone should not be convicted for that," claimed members of the group "Academics for Peace" in Januar 2016 in their petition adressed to the Turkish state.

However, today, over 1.000 of those, who had then signed the petition against war in the Kurdish areas of Turkey have lost their jobs at universities, non profit organisations, state institiutions, in the media or in cultural institutions. Many of them have been or still are imprisoned, accused of "membership in a terrorist community", suffer from occupational bans or from prohibitions on leaving Turkish territory on pain of penalties such as disappropriation or arrest.
