And it is so important to preserve this freedom and to support people who courageously fight for it under the most difficult circumstances.”

Aber auch in Europa müssen wir uns ständig dafür stark machen und allen Anfängen ihrer Einschränkung wehren. Der Palm-Preis erinnert uns immer wieder an diese Aufgabe.”

“Das Recht auf Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit steht heute, gut 250 Jahre nach der Geburt von Johann Philipp Palm, in vielen Teilen der Welt vor anderen und wohl auch noch größeren Herausforderungen als Palms Nachfahren ahnen konnten, als sie den Palm-Preis im Jahr 2002 ins Leben riefen. Die freie Rede und ihre Verfechter, die unabhängigen, kritischen Medien, sind auf vielfältige Weise bedroht: politisch, aber zunehmend auch technologisch, da Algorithmen den Prozess der Meinungsbildung im Netz unterminieren und manipulieren.”

“Erst durch Meinungsfreiheit kann sich der Geist selbst »öffentlich« entfalten und sich mit anderen messen, um das Bessere zu schaffen. Das gilt gleichermaßen für die Politik wie auch für ihr öffentliches Echo, die Presse: Kritisches Beleuchten der Entscheidungen geht nur bei Meinungsfreiheit. Unterdrückung der öffentlich geäußerten Meinung allerdings untergräbt das öffentliche Vertrauen in der Gesellschaft. Ohne dieses hat sie aber keinen guten Bestand.”
